* RAGING STILL *
Grainy footage rolls on-screen, backed with ‘The Bat’ by The Ventures. Clips of Arch working the territories in the 90’s, going to Japan and across the globe in the 2000’s. Wild brawls and big matches in small promotions throughout the SouthEast. Blood and guts and glory.
The footage fades away to reveal an older, heavier, and weathered Arch Stanton leaning against his car on the outskirts of Anholt. He still has strength and fire, but the miles show more and more. His ultra-thick sideburns are specked with gray. His chest and gut continue to grow. Through all the superficial signs of advancing age, the man still exudes his unique quality. It’s clear the bull still rages.
He gazes out at the desert horizon. Things in Anholt have calmed down considerably over the past few years, mostly because he got nearly everything he wanted. His rivals were crushed, his word was practically law, one of the Old Families even packed up and left. NOW is a pretty good situation for Stanton, but he can’t help looking over the horizon.
Not one to engage in academic studies of Time and Space, Arch still realizes the implications of momentum and that Past, Present, and Future are intertwined. He raged to survive for many years and grew to like it. To Love it. Once he was financially secure, his Love was unbound – unhampered by monetary circumstance or backrent. As it is today, he no longer must fight for a living. Indeed, he must live to fight.
He considers the layers of the veil, speculating on the horizon while being a product of his past. His narrowed eyes beam with something similar to (but not exactly) nostalgia. A knowledge, a flame.
Old School? Shit, son – Arch Stanton’s got the PHD! I broke in a long time ago, sure – but the guys who broke me in were waaaay back, daddy. Old timers. Nasty muthas, son – real bad. That’s who taught me an’ that’s how I learned. It’s a big part of me, but it’s jus’ the past.
I’ve done a lotta things. Things I’m proud of, things I ain’t. I’ve worn gold, I’ve spilled blood. I’ve put men in the hospital, an’ I been there myself. UWL is where I burned the brightest, ‘cause the big fights were always here. I have fond memories, but that ain’t why I’m back around…
Arch looks at the camera and grins.
I don’t live in the past. Not too much. It’s made me what I am – but I am what I am right now, daddy! I’m me this very second, baby – an’ I know where I stand.
I ain’t just about the old days, fella. It ain’t somethin’ to sit around an’ pine for. It’s somethin’ under our belts. Collective experience – collective progression. Scaffolds, straps, a spike in Dusty’s eye. That’s road paved fer us all.
Maybe they were the Glory Days, but they’re just notches on a sword. Who holds it now? Who’s swingin’ the damn thing right this second? Anyone who laces up the boots at any time inherits that legacy and is part of it. It don’t matter where you come from. Nobody gives a damn about yer plans. Who-the-hell-are-ya when that bell rings tonight?
Arch looks around before cocking his head back to the camera with a sneer.
Well, I got BAD NEWS fer everyone concerned, ‘cause Arch Stanton is still his same ol’ self! It’s the same ol’ sh*t, baby – an’ I SWEAR TO GOD there’s an asswhippin’ fer any stupid sunuvab*tch that’ll climb in the ring with me. Race, age, religion – it’s an equal oppurtunity, pal…
He shakes his head, hands on hips.
There’s a lotta things that change in this world. Some things use-ta be true that ain’t no more, baby – an’, fella, the hands on the clock are movin’. But here’s somethin’ you can hold onto. Somethin’ you can set yer goddamn watch by.
The video package fades back in featuring footage from his tenure in UWL: Winning the Heritage Title, retiring Phenominal Blue in Philadelphia, wreaking havoc as enforcer for “3”, dismantling The War Machines, slaying Gubayama in Japan, piledriving Stephen Callaway on the floor, laying out Christian Kane with a large wrench, brutalizing Jay Scarlet in the crowd, clashing with Alan Christopher in the Steel Cage! Blood and Guts and Glory.
AS (voice over):
Arch Stanton is his same ol’ self. You can take it as a warning if you want to. You can take it as a threat. I’m jus’ tellin’ the truth, daddy – jus’ like it is. Arch Stanton is back in the U-Dubya-L, an’ he is his same ol’ self…
The footage continues to roll as the picture fades out to the UWL logo.
